Who are we?
The 9th Barking & Dagenham Scout Group has been around for a very long time and is over 80 years old. We are one of many different groups who meet within the District of Barking, Dagenham & Newham. Although we run separately, we do work closely with the other groups and their leaders at various joint events. This is not only within our District, but we also work with other scouters across our county of Greater London North East.
Leaders:
Each section has its own team of leaders and assistants and are run independently, although there are close links with all of the sections in the group. The Group Scout Leader is the leader in charge of all of the sections and leaders and provides support for everyone.
(Almost) all adults in Scouting, including uniformed leaders are volunteers. They give their time for free and are not paid. The leaders at the 9th Barking & Dagenham are all experienced in their fields and have been in the Scout Movement for quite a while. As a team, we are committed to the enjoyment and teaching of the children / young people and give up a great deal of our spare time and effort in order to achieve this.
Who else is involved with the Group?
The Group Executive Committee is made up of parents and leaders and is similar to that of a board of governors that you would find within a school setting. The Group Executive Committee plays a vital role in the running of a Scout Group and makes decisions as well as carrying out administrative tasks to ensure that the best quality of Scouting is delivered to the young people in the Group.
What do the young people do?
All of our young people are encouraged to forge friendships (some which last a lifetime), make many happy memories, learn new life skills, teach others and become valuable and respected members of our community. This is achieved by their social interaction with each other, teamwork, leadership and independence.
The Scout Association's programmes are very inclusive and can be easily adapted to suit the needs of all of its members. No young person is excluded because they may struggle with certain things.
As well as our weekly meetings, we also take part in activities such as sleepovers and camps, competitions at District and County level, outings and skills days.
